why they voted as they did

VALUING EXPERIENCE: Republican John McCain ran strongly among voters who cited experience and values as important. Voters seeking change backed Barack Obama, the Democratic president elect.

THE PALIN EFFECT?: A solid majority of voters approved of Sarah Palin's performance as governor. But more than a fourth of these voters supported Obama over McCain and running mate Palin

PALIN COUNTRY: McCain's greatest base of support was in small cities and rural areas such as the region that includes Palin's hometown of Wasilla, where she served two terms as mayor. Many in that region share Palin's conservative ideology.

WHAT'S THE WORRY? The economy was a concern for almost half of Alaska voters, but their support was evenly split between McCain and Obama. Among a smaller number of voters who said Iraq was the most important issue facing the nation, Obama had the apparent edge, surprising for a state with four large military installations.

THE RACE CARD: Overall, voters in the predominantly white state said the race of the presidential candidates was not important. But more than a quarter of white voters said it was a factor and they were leaning heavily toward McCain.

CONVICTED FELON: Two out of every three voters said Sen. Ted Stevens' corruption trial was a factor, and a significant majority of them voted for Democrat Mark Begich, the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city.

BIG CITY BACKERS: Begich had the greatest show of support in the state's more urban areas, including Anchorage. Stevens led in some suburban Republican strongholds.

The winner was selected by editors at the Green Car Journal and a mixed bag of jurors, including Carroll Shelby, Jay Leno and Jacques Cousteau’s son, Jean-Michel, who is the president of the Ocean Futures Society.
